I have a friend dealing some tough losses in his life. He ended up in Central America doing some traveling and chilling out. How is he getting back? In February he bought a 1971 Land Rover Defender Series IIA (In Spanish, in the middle of the street) and is drving it back from Costa Rica. Thought I would share some pics of ‘La Sirena’ and his trip back to Chicago so far. He’s in Acapulco right now.

Only one of the ones in this picture, oddly enough, is the Spain-produced and latin american market Land Rover Santana. All the rest are real boys.

The windshield wiper motor on these late IIas is behind this cover, and not a pair of little cans mounted to the windshield frame. It’s also TWO SPEED OMG

How about it! It’s a 1967 Series II.

The late IIA also has an extra switch on the top of the dash, partly because wipers. Nevermind that the dash already had a switch that does nothing except turn on the dash lights. You know, because sometimes you want the headlights on but the dash lights would be such a bummer, man.

A very tricky axle swap has taken place here. Rangey axles, I think.

I don’t recognize these lights. May have been latin american market only.

Thanks for the 411 RamblinRover. That Rover cemetery outside of Antigua where he broke down and had to coast down a mountain. Only place they could find a $3 part to fix his beast and be on his way.

*IIa. Yes, they changed the model designation from II to IIa to cover some changes to the steering arms and changes to the engine offerings slate and one piece of sheet metal (usually). No, they didn’t change the designation from IIa to anything else when they changed the grill, fenders, interior, transmission, brake system, the same piece of metal again, radiator, and a bunch of other things. Nobody knows why.

Your friend is doing something I dream of doing if I didn’t have adult responsibilities (wife and a house). That’s such a great looking IIa and Defenders are the newer version of this truck so it’s just a Series IIa.

The trickiest part is getting the angles correct on all the mounts. Although if you use Disco axles, you can stick ARB’s in there and have a way less complicated disk brake setup. I HATE bleeding the brakes on RRC’s.
